…… 5 Posts Set for By-Election
The 2025 Students’ Union Executive Council, SUEC, elections at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, have officially produced five winners, with Afolabi Temitope Ayodele, popularly known as Big Afo, emerging as the institution’s 41st Students’ Union President.
The elections, held on September 19, saw 12 candidates stepped down due to inconclusive departmental results, while five other key posts were declared vacant and scheduled for by-election.
According to the Students’ Electoral Committee, Students Union Electoral Committee, SUELECO, the declared winners include Afolabi Temitope Ayodele, who polled 763 votes to secure the presidency; Ekundayo Gbenga, elected General Secretary with 632 votes; Oladipupo Omobolanle Esther, who became Financial Secretary with 687 votes; Oyelola Jumoke Mutmainat, elected Social Director with 633 votes; and Adeola Adelakun, who emerged as Welfare Director with 649 votes.
SUELECO explained that the Vice President, Treasurer, Assistant General Secretary, Public Relations Officer, and Sports Director positions could not be filled because the aspirants’ academic results had not been cleared by their various departments.
The electoral body stressed that the union’s constitution makes provision for by-elections in such cases, and once the affected aspirants are certified eligible, fresh polls will be conducted to fill the vacant positions.
Despite the disqualification of some aspirants, the election itself was largely peaceful and transparent. SUELECO chairman confirmed that voting began at 10:10 a.m. and proceeded without glitches, with agents of all candidates monitoring the process.
Out of 3,451 registered voters, 1,479 had already cast their ballots by 11:55 a.m., and turnout continued until the close of polls.
The outcome cements Big Afo’s place in MAPOLY’s student politics as the 41st union president, and with expectations high, the student body now looks to his administration and the rest of the elected executives to champion welfare, accountability, and inclusiveness.
Therefore, the by-elections are expected to be announced once departmental clearances are completed.
