80 Millions Nigerians Suffer Unimproved Sanitation, Battle Cholera

Cholera is an acute diarrhea infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholera and it has remains a global threat to public health and an indicator of inequity and lack of social development whereas unimproved sanitation includes Flush or pour-flush to elsewhere, Pit latrine without slab or open pit, Bucket, hanging toilet or hanging latrine and  No facilities or bush or field (open defecation)

The Rector of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Dr. Adeoye Odedeji disclosed that about 80 millions Nigerians are without improved sanitation while some are battling with cholera.

Odedeji made this disclosure during the commissioning of boreholes by the rotary clubs in Abeokuta, on Friday, which was held at the school premises behind the Students’ Union Chamber.

According to him,  unimproved sanitation has its consequences, such as gender violence on woman and children because they carry the burden of seeking for water on a  daily basis.

Odedeji explained further that the completion of the Borehole project has solved a fundamental problem facing the institution.

He said the project could had be in front of the administrative block but when they considered the idles guiding the activities of the rotary club they had no other choice than to accept this project to be where it is planted today.

He stated further that other reasons why the project sited where it is was because of the students and also  to promote sanitation, hygiene and also to prevent conflict among the market women who operate here.

He said that the club had put a smile on the face of the institution by solving one of the fundamental problems facing the polytechnic.

‘’I want to say that the cooperation on of this project, is one of the fundamental project and the problem in the Polytechnic’’.

The event was graced by notable personalities; Ashipa of  Egba Land, Oba Rasheed Raji, who represented the Alake of Egba Land, Oba Adedapo Tejuosho, MAPOLY Rector, Deputy Rector, Registrar, Rotarians, Departmental HODs, Director of students affairs, Student union President, among others dignitaries.
