The Association of Mass communication students Electoral Committee (AMEC) has said it will not bow to pressure of making changes to its electoral requirements.
The chairman, Felix Idowu in an exclusive interview with Press Club MAPOLY made this disclosure on behalf of AMEC following rumours that the committee is intending to adjust its criteria so as to favour some aspirants.
This is coming just as some sect of aspirants made a plea to the electoral committee through the departmental executive.
Separate quarters have kicked against this development; others opined that taking up a post in the department should not be based on CGPA.
Confirming the plea, Felix said, “some set of aspirants said they represent committee of aspirants and they made reservations to the department and not the AMEC committee that they want the CGPA reduced and suggested theirs.”
Those against this stand said that there was never a recognized ‘committee of aspirants, as the said plea was allegedly made by a group which does not represent all the aspirants.
The AMACOS President, Wisdom Ogbonna is yet to confirm or debunk his office receiving the said appeal from the aspirants.
In his response to how the grade point was arrived, Felix said, “the normal CGPA should be the first semester HND 1 result but because of the school inability to yet release the result, that was why the final ND result was used (for aspirants in HND1) and this was what was used for the last election… o’ level and jamb result will be used to assess aspirants from the ND level.”
He added that the criteria were earlier proposed by the committee, passed on to the department and it was approved before the announcement was made to the general public.
While speaking on their stand on changing the electoral process, Felix said, ‘we will not’ adding that ‘that the position of the AMEC should stand’ even after the meeting scheduled to address the issue which will hold later on Monday.
