The management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic has revealed that the economic situation of the country lead to the increase in the acceptance fee payment for the 2020/2021 admission.
Head Public Relations and Protocol of the Polytechnic, Mr. Yemi Ajibola disclosed this while speaking with Press Club MAPOLY.
The management earlier increased the acceptance fee for newly admitted students from N25,500 to N35, 000, PCM had gathered.
This is coming after the Polytechnic released the first batch admission list for the Higher National Diploma candidates.
The Management while announcing the release of the first batch admission list for HND candidates urged all candidates offered admission, to accept the offer by paying the non-refundable acceptance fee via the Polytechnic’s portal before Monday, 18th January, 2021.
According to the P.R.O in a Press Statement said, "candidates, whose names are not on the 1st batch list, should be hopeful on the subsequent lists"
However, PCM observed that the acceptance fee which was usually N25,500 has been increased to N35,000.
This development has since begin to generate controversies amongst the students.
A student identified as Tobi said the economy of the country had led to the increase but what is the essence of acceptance fee.
"As the level of economy moves many schools would also have increased theirs. Don’t be surprise they are into all this for financial gain and not for impartation and in a sane country what’s acceptance fee?
”It’s only in a place like Africa that we are where things like this happens. Anyway may God bless the applicants to pay it’s the first sacrifice to the land of education in Nigeria" he wrote on a WhatsApp Platform
Matthew, another student said that it is likely that school tution fee also increases as a result of the increment in the acceptance fee.
"It’s obvious that our school fees will increase with this action from the management"
When contacted by PCM on why the Polytechnic increased the fee, the PRO,
stated that the economic situation of the country led to the increment in the fee.
Ajibola stated that the Polytechnic acceptance fee is the lowest in the state when compared to other institutions.
"The current acceptance fee paid by prospective students of MAPOLY was fixed about 13yrs ago. You will agree that, the current economy situation of the country calls for an increase."
He said the increase in acceptance fee is not contestable saying that candidates have the choice to either reject or accept the offer.
Ajibola however assured students that the Polytechnic is not planning to increase the school fees.
" MAPOLY is not increasing school fees, note one thing, those acceptance fee we are referring to is not for students of the institution but for candidates.
"Those that will pay the acceptance fee are not our students they are our candidates, it is an offer and it is left for them to accept or reject."
The PRO said any candidates who wishes to be a student of the Polytechnic have the option to pay to get stundenship adding that the increase in acceptance fee is not contestable.
"Anyone that wants to obtain our studentship should pay the acceptance fee and gets studentship.
"It is not something that can be contestable because they are not students of the Polytechnic yet. They are never students but candidates.It is not something that anybody can carry placard that the school has increased tution fee.
"Is it someone who is not yet a student that will raise placard that the school fees has been increased?
"The school fees remains what you have been charged. Nobody is increasing the school fees." He said
