Just like the nation’s democratic system, students in campuses are also given the freedom to elect leaders into respective unions and bodies that manage the affairs and welfarism of students. They are commonly referred to as campus politicians.
Known for adopting nicknames to promote their political prowess, these political actors divides themselves into groups (political parties) to contest for dominance in socio political affairs of the institution.
Though, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic has constantly dismissed the presence of any political forums, it is wildly believe that if you do not belong to any forum you cannot win any position.
Just like Nigerian politics,t is believe that godfatherism determines who aspires, contests and win the election. Who then are the godfathers? An unanswered question that bothers the mind of students.
While we can not rule or out the fact that campus politicians have transcended to becoming political actors in the state or country at large, it is saddening that electioneering processes have been violent as well as leadership position misused for selfish purposes. Forums have associated themselves with cultism and threat.
Press Club Mapoly, having observed several election processes, suggests that the school intensifies effort to scarp all political forums as well as godfatherism in the school.
Orientation and proper understanding is needed for peaceful co-existent if truly this are leaders students want to hold in high esteem and look to emulate.
To the campus politicians and freshers, it is important that matters regarding anointing of candidates should be done peacefully and not generate unnecessary hullabaloos of a selfish interest by a particular group indicting one forum, individual or members against one another.
Students who are campus politicians should therefore note that they would not be students forever albeit there is life outside school.
