LETTERS: Effect of social networks on students performance

Kabirat Ayilara

Social network to me has been something of great joy and relief of loneliness, I guess in that last statement I’ve spoken for most young people but not until I discovered the effect both negatively and positively on academic performance and including our natural behaviours.
Social network is the platform in which its enables people of different levels age, background and belief to interact using network devices like phone,PC and many more in order to send pictures, music, videos, files, documents and also to share ideas, advertise and communicate effectively within a short stipulated time.
The social network became more visible around year 2004 upward and since then its has increasingly grown to it fullness thereby adding more fun to it,making it more accessible for all.
I could remember vividly the first social network I joined was 2go and later Facebook so that leads us to knowing the social network we have,2go,Facebook, Instagram, e-buddy, Bebo, Telegram, Ello, Netlog.
Now talking about the positive effect of social networks on student performance is that its create a platform in which student studying the course in different institution to share ideas transfer resourceful files, send results and analysis which will help in knowing more about their course therefore including increasing their chances of performing better in their respective study.
Another positive effect of its is that teachers and lecturers can send assignment to the student through the special networks and also send necessary materials relating to their study in order to boost their knowledge about the course.
The negative effect bores down to the way nowadays student uses the social networks, most student uses it to discuss unnecessary things, send un educative stuff, which would amount to nothing except failure in school or academic environment.
Furthermore, the social network also affect the student use of words in writing, taking for example instead of using the word “fine” the chatting environment allows “fyn” ,instead of “welcome” they use “wlcm” and many more this goes a long way whenever student are writing test or exams even in presenting a topic of talk in school they tend to use those abbreviations instead of the real words, that automatically reduces the chances of getting a better performance in their academics purse.
