On Thursday, 25th November, Abdulrasheed Olamide Olanrewaju was crowned as the new President of PRESS CLUB MAPOLY after passing through due screening. Abdulrasheed hails from the department of Electrical Electronics Engineering. He has been a member of the club since July 2021 till date.
In this exclusive interview with Oladele Akinyemi, he unrolled his plans, as the President, for the club:
Why Press Club Mapoly?
Well, one of the reasons I joined was because I wanted a club or team of like-minded people: writers, journalists and the like. As I mentioned above, I’m from Electrical Engineering Department where the concern is about what would happen if this red wire meets another red wire. A greater part of engineering students are bothered about solving Circuit Theory. No one has the time or mental fortitude to be a writer.
How do you plan to keep up with Engineering and Writing ?
There has never been a clash between Engineering and Writing. Engineering is business, Writing is pleasure, and I don’t mix business with pleasure.
How did you feel after being elected as the new PCM President?
Being elected and crowned as the President of Press club Mapoly came as a surprise as I wasn’t expecting to emerge as the President. This hasn’t happened in the history of PCM.
What are your aspirations for Press Club?
Press Club Mapoly is being known for its excellence. I plan to keep that excellence going.
What’s your thought about the last administration?
The coordination and mutual respect among the excos was commendable, They worked well like a well-oiled machine.
Have you held a leadership position before?
I was the Assistant Head Boy back in my secondary school days
Who will you call your mentor?
Mr Kayode Adediran. I met him during my I.T at Tonad Publishers Limited, producers of Essentials Textbook series. He told me to join the school’s Press Club whenever I assume for my HND Program, saying being among writers would help me grow my skills faster. Before I ventured into the freelancing world, I will always send my works to him for criticism before posting them. He had acknowledged my writing prowess ever since.
Should we be expecting non-mass communication students flooding the club?
Yeah! Expect more of engineering students because I will hunt for students of my like and persuade them not to bury their skill by joining PCM.
Your advice for students, writers and many more?
A word of advice to everyone reading this – colleagues, student or a member of the club: Nothing is impossible. As long as you can dream it, you can achieve it.
