Students of Moshood Abiola polytechnic have been grossly affected by the fuel scarcity ravaging the country following the recent detection of adulterated petroleum in some states of the federation causing hardship to the students populace.
Prior to the present fuel scarcity, students of MAPOLY were finding it difficult boarding shuttle buses to school due to the deplorable conditions of the road that lead to the school premises amid other reasons. That on its own has been a challenge facing the students, compounded with the fuel scarcity making life more difficult for the students.
Oftentimes, you see students struggling and fighting their way in to get a bus to school and along the line, some get injured while some lose their vital documents or possessions. For some ill-intentioned students, they use that as an avenue to steal their fellow students phones and money.
Students of MAPOLY seem to be the worst hit by the fuel crisis as getting a bus has now become survival of the fittest. Those who cannot scramble for bus resort to trekking a long distance to school due to the fuel scarcity.
It is worth noting also that academic activities in the school have been adversely affected as students no longer come to classes regularly. Even the few ones who manage to come are not encouraged as lecturers don’t even show up at times in classes. All these have a detrimental effect on learning, and by and large, the academic performance of students.
Part of the menace of fuel scarcity to students is the increase in transportation fee of shuttle buses. It was gathered that the shuttle buses students board for N50 has now been increased to N100 following the fuel scarcity. Students who cannot afford the fee are forced to resort to trekking.
It has now become a tradition to see long queues of students waiting at various designated bus stops for vehicle to convey them to school.
On this note, it is imperative for lecturers to be considerate and not turn deaf ears and blind eyes to the plight of the students as we see some lecturers shutting the doors on students once it is time for lecture. The lecturers should bear with the students pending the time nolmacy be restored.
So also, the students should not see this situation as an avenue for them to miss classes and not be punctual in school as what is worth doing is what doing well.
Similarly, school management should find a way of alleviating the pains of the students by making provision for enough buses and repairing the ones in bad conditions to ease the lingering transportation issues of students.
Equally, the state government should endeavor to repair the roads that lead to the school to enable shuttle buses ply the road more often, thereby making transportation available and stress-free for students. All these put in place will ensure an effective and conducive learning environment for the students and commensurately reduce the stress encountered by students.
