The Students Representatives Council of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic now has a new speaker alongside four other principal officers.
The election process was supervised by the Chairman of Students Union Electoral Commission, SUELECO, Shobowale Oluwatobi at Jibodu Hall.
The newly elected speaker,Fisayo Akinlabi from Business Administration department emerged as the 37th speaker of the school ,pulled 11 votes while his deputy Agboola Sherrif from Electrical Engineering department pulled 11 votes as well.
Others were Gloria Akpororo elected as the Chief Whip from the department of Science Laboratory Technology pulled 7 votes and Ibrahim Abass as Clerk from from Computer Science pulled 9 votes.
The swear-in oath of the four elected principal officers of SRC was anchored by the Barrister of the school, Barrister Razaq Yinka Shefiu.
Present at the occasion was the Director of Students Affairs, Dr Olusegun Aninkan who expressed his happiness towards the election process.
While addressing the press, he said, "I’m the happiest. We are moving forward because during the last regime, we intended to get a functioning and a vibrant Students Union in place. Many do not believe but coming from a background as a unionist, now there is a relatively better stability, we are having more confidence in the process."
Commenting on section 4, subsection 3 of the SRC Constitution which states that students who had their ND in other schools are not allowed to hold any principal post in the legislative arm, Dr Aninkan maintained that the purpose of that is to allow students who are familiar with the school run for the posts.
He, however, stated that as time goes by the constitution will be reviewed.
"First, that is the Constitution. The decision was made by the Students, and the Academic board Committee tried to fine tune it. The spirit of putting that is that ordinarily, there should be a consideration that whoever should be the speaker should be from the school as they are quite familiar with the institution and are not ‘learners’. But as time goes on, the constitution will be reviewed," he said.
In the same vein, he advised the newly elected officials to strictly adhere to the constitution and seek clarification when the need arises.
"Follow the constitution and they should refused to be pushed by anyone, not even the DSA but follow what is supposed to be and where they are not clear on,they should ask questions to seek clarifications," Aninkan said.
Similarly, the outgoing SUG president, Comrade Adeola Babatunde (Babs) also shared his feelings about the inauguration of the elected members of SRC.
He said,"Today’s event marks the trend of unionism which is a thing of joy. It is a great privilege to see the continuity of students’ political activities on campus."
He stated that a similar process will take place at the executive level in alignment with the constitution and will equally pave way for the incoming executives to take over.
Reacting to the section of the SRC Constitution which states that students who had their ND in other schools are not allowed to hold any principal post in the legislative arm, Babs claimed that the constitution should be reviewed so as to effect change as some of these students might even have greater advantages over students who did their ND in MAPOLY due to the exposure they have gathered in their respective institutions.
"Many students from other institution might even have more potential than the indigene which can bring positive results because of the exposure they have gathered from where they are coming from," he said.
Reacting to 60/40% payment of school fee, Babs said, "We have met with the school management and we were told that the matter has been tabled to the office of the governor waiting for approval but the school needs money to run many facilities in the school which makes them to collect full payment school fees.
He, however, assured that the 60/40 payment mode will be returned to status quo.
