With the Commencement of the election so far, it has been observed that there is a low turnout of students for the election.
Reacting to this is the Chairman of the Students Union Electoral Committee, SUELECO, Shobowale Oluwatobi. He said the students are aware that today is the election but they can’t be forced to vote as many of them prefers to rest today as it is a lecture-free day.
Another credible source who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the reason is a result of the duration and time frame of the election.
He said, "the main problem about this election is that they didn’t program the date and time well enough, because they gave them four days for the campaign which two days fall on public holidays, that’s the reason the aspirants could not go for the campaign."
He also added that students are no longer interested in Student Unionism again due to the economic situation of the country as unionism involves money and also the challenges facing the Polytechnic.
Speaking with the Public Relations Officer of SUELECO, Adebayo Taiwo on the reason behind the low turn of students.
He said, "it is because there was no opposition of any of the SUG posts and because the way the election is unopposed, the students felt the need of not voting."
He added how information was passed across to the students concerning the election, that it wasn’t as a result of lack of information the students refused to show up.
He said, "when the department that has the highest population could not produce a candidate,they would be no turn out of voters at the election".
