An ND2 student of Mass Communication, Aina Susan has been declared the winner of the 5th edition of the AMACOS public speaking competition tagged "thought penned are voices heard".
The competition which was held on Monday at Mass Communication Main hall had 16 participants who spoke on various topics such as the political structure; Feminism in governance; Fraud:the sweetest thing among youths and Using your Temperament to your advantage.
Aina, who emerged as the winner of the competition spoke on the topic, fraud:the sweetest thing among the youth, pointing out the causes of why the youth engaged in fraud.
Earlier, the head of the department, Mass Communication, Lekan Togunwa appreciated the AMACOS executives for sustaining the legacy left behind by their predecessors while congratulating the contestants for their efforts.
He said," AMACOS has done well, the executives have done well to sustain what has become a tradition, I know it has not been easy to pull resources together to ensure the commencement of the program, I pray God continues to bless them to know that they have achieved something because this is the most important part of the week".
He, however, expressed disappointment at the level of preparedness of the contestants, urging them to take it more seriously and put in more effort.
"The event appeared that the contestants did not prepare hard for the program, I believe they could do better in the coming ones because to me, they didn’t work hard enough, probably some of them felt overconfident. The judges also noted that in terms of standard, it appeared something is happening, which we need to encourage our students to take more serious, it’s not a competition that they can just take for granted or just get involved to be seen or make an impression but a serious business to a bigger achievement in their careers. He stated.
Similarly, the former Student Union president, Omoniyi Samson, also one of the judges said he wasn’t too happy with the performance of the contestants.
" There wasn’t a competition today because I expected more from the contestants and probably the screening wasn’t as thorough as expected as the participants were not prepared for the competition."
"I felt the organizers should have increased the tension of the competition more than what we saw today, sincerely I wasn’t happy with the outcome of the program". Omoniyi stated.
He, therefore, advised the participants not to take the outcome of the competition to heart and that not winning today does not mean they won’t win next time.
Aina Susan was announced the winner while Balogun Jesuferanmi and Agunbiade Praise from ND1 and ND2 emerged second and third respectively.
Susan who emerged as the overall winner was given an award and a cash price of N21,000; Akorede who came second was given N14,000 While Praise, the third position was given N7000 respectively.
