Frustration seems to be the best name of the majority of the students of Higher National Diploma (HND) ll, of Accountancy department (part time) who sat for the HND I second semester 2015/2016 examination as mass failure hits the class.
The students cried out after their HND l second semester results were posted last week leaving so many of them in surprise and frustration.
It was gathered that the HND ll part time students did not produce any upper credit student, and out of 315 registered students of the class, only four students were able to make lower credits, 299 students found themselves in the pass grades, while 12 other students were advised to withdraw.
It would be recalled that few months ago some lecturers of the School of Business and Management Studies (SBMS) were suspended and demoted following an alleged attempt to ‘shoot’ students grade up.
Meanwhile, some students who met with the CAMPUS PRESS around 7pm at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat, Iwe Iroyin on Thursday expressed their dissatisfaction over the just released result.
They alleged that the HOD, Oluwafemi Omotilewa was the one who intentionally failed them so as to convince the management that his embattled colleagues are responsible for the students’ ‘fortune’ over the years.
They also alleged that Omotilewa failed almost 80 percent of the students who wrote the examination for his course last year.
The students who spoke through their representative added that the HOD is also planning to extort the present HND 1 students, saying that he was planning to buy a car with the student’s money.
The students further said the HOD dismissed their Taxation lecturer following his refusal to follow his (HOD’s) path in failing the students intentionally.
According to the letter sent to Press Club MAPOLY titled ‘Unacceptable results of HND II Accountancy Department of MAPOLY’, the students however appealed to the management to come to their aid.
The letter reads in part, “the latest released result of Accountancy HND ll of 2016/2017 academic session cannot be acceptable by the students (sic.).
“The acting Head of Department of Accountancy failed us for some personal reasons which include; wanting to prove to the school board that the former HOD is helping and supporting students by giving free marks and assisting them in their exams which was not true.
“The rate of carry overs in his course last year was over 80 percent and he was still insinuating that the HND l students will fail as well, if care is not taken, saying that he will use their money to buy a car for personal use.
“The worst part of it is that, he dismissed our Taxation lecturer for refusing to adjust the students’ results and make sure no student scored above 40-50 marks,(sic.) the man’s refusal led to his dismissal by the HOD.
“The HOD himself told the HND I students that the rector has asked him to make necessary adjustment to the result which he promised to do, but he did not do anything after the meeting.
“The rate of students who were dismissed and asked to withdraw from the department due to bad performance was 12 and the worst of it all is that only four students are in the lower grade, while others are in pass grade.
“We also don’t have any student with upper grades, only for the lecturers to keep blaming the students for not reading and not attending classes.
“All we want is an amendment of the result; we as evening students who pay more, than the full-timers and we are the one having the worst result in the department”.
Press Club MAPOLY learnt that the result of the HND ll Accountancy full-time students has not been released as at the time of filling this report.
President, National Association of Polytechnic Accountancy Students (NAPAS), Ibrahim Akorede said he would get back to Press Club MAPOLY when contacted on phone.
Akorede, an HND II student of the department is yet to do so as at the time of filing this report.
When Press Club MAPOLY visited Omotilewa at his office on Monday, he challenged the students to call for their scripts if they are confident of themselves.
The HOD explained that the result was posted according to the score sheets submitted by individual lecturers to the department.
He added that most of the evening students are not serious minded, explaining that most of them were admitted as evening students because they had pass grades during their National Diploma programme.
Omotilewa also denied getting any memo from the Rector or management to make adjustments to the already released result.
“The result we posted was the score sheet submitted to us by individual lecturers. They have that result because they are unserious and don’t attend classes regularly.
“If they are confident of themselves, they should call for their scripts.
“Most of them are below average and they got the result because they have pass grades during their ND programmes. Our hands are clean.
“We did not receive any memo from the Management or Rector to make any adjustment to the result, all they are saying is not true,” Omotilewa said.
