The management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic has put on hold, the students’ union election, saying the decision was an order from above.
It would be recalled that the election manifesto and voting, was scheduled for 2nd and 3rd November respectively.
Aspirants and voters had gathered for the manifesto programme at the school’s Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD) Auditorium when the electoral committee announced that the election had been suspended by the school management.
The chairman of the Students Union Electoral Committee Adesola Anuoluwapo, when approached by press men said the committee was in the dark as to why the election could not hold.
Anoluwapo said, "the management did not give us any reason. They only said ‘order from above."
However, representatives from Students’ Representative Council(SRC), National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Directorate of Students’ Affairs (DSA) and SUELECO were involved in a closed-door
meeting that lasted for 40 minutes at the DSA’s office after the announcement at the OGD auditorium.
Attempts made to get information from representatives of the above-listed bodies after the meeting was over was unsuccessful as they all kept mum.
However, a participant in the meeting who prays anonymity later threatened that "the election must hold."
The DSA when approached by members of Press club simply said, "I have nothing to say."
Meanwhile, aspirants and students who spoke with Press club accused the government of Ogun State of trying to kill unionism on MAPOLY Campus.
One of the Presidential candidates known as Adegoke John Adekola a.k.a ‘Journey’ lamented that the suspension was a sad news as he never envisaged such.
His words, "It is sad that they just came to give us news that order
came from above that the election and everything should be on hold"
"This is what is killing unionism on campus. They are just using
government power."
However, Journey’s opponent named Owoiya Rasak Oluwatobi a.k.a ‘Owomumy’ was unwilling to speak about the development.
Owomumy shunned the press when approached, saying "please I have something important to think about."
An ND 1 student of Mass Communication, Tijani Oluwatosin popularly known as ‘Alex’ who is the vice president-elect of the department’s association urged
the management and the government not to meddle into the affairs of students.
He said, "this is students affairs and the government should not interfere."
Alex expressed fear about the coming examinations, praying that it is not suspended like the election.
"I am confused right now. Some students are even doubting if examination would hold on Monday" he said.
