… President, Others Announced as Winners Unopposed
… Despite 3,686 Accredited Voters, Only 550 Turn Up
Students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, have elected Ogunlana Isaac as the 40th Students’ Union Government, SUG, President-elect with 550 Votes, following the conclusion of the 2024/2025 Student Union Executive Council, SUEC election.
The election, organized by the Student Union Electoral Committee, SUELECO, on March 4, 2025, saw all candidates running unopposed, leading to their automatic declaration as winners.
The official results were announced in a press release signed by SUELECO, confirming Isaac’s victory along with other elected executive members.
Other members of the newly elected SUG executives include:
Olabisi Adeleye, who got elected as the Vice President with 404 votes. Also, Abdulkareem Mubaraq, elected as the General Secretary, won with 407 votes.
In the same vein, Nwafor Chizoba, the Financial Secretary elect won with 401 votes, while Folami Gbolahan won with 400 votes as Treasurer.
Fortune Peter won with 402 votes as the Social Director as Odeoba David Ariyo won as the Assistant General Secretary with 395 votes.
The Public Relations Officer seat was taken by Abdullahi Samuel with 396 votes while Lateef Olayiwola Idowu got the Sports Director seat with 394 votes.
Olajide Mary, the Welfare Director elect won with 505 votes, moving close to the president elect who got 550 votes.
… Low Voter Turnout Despite 3,686 Accredited Voters
Despite an accreditation of 3,686 voters, only 550 students turned up to cast their votes. This low turnout has raised concerns about student participation in campus governance.
Some students attributed the apathy to a lack of competition, as all candidates were unopposed, while others pointed to inadequate awareness and mobilization by SUELECO.
Students have however stated that the institution was supposed to make the election day a lecture – free day to give publicity and drive students to vote.
Drama as Aspirant Demands Refund After Late Purchase of Forms
The election process was not without controversy, as an aspirant who purchased the nomination form late demanded a refund after realizing that all positions had already been secured by unopposed candidates.
The demand led to some tension, but SUELECO maintained that all sales were final, as per the election guidelines.
President-elect, Ogunlana Isaac Promises a Student-Centered Leadership
In his victory speech, Ogunlana Isaac expressed gratitude to the students, stakeholders, and supporters who made his election possible. He emphasized unity, promising to serve every student regardless of their stance during the elections.
“This victory is not just mine; it belongs to every student who believed in the vision, stood by me, and made their voices count. My leadership is for every student, and I assure you that your voices and concerns will always matter. The real work begins now, and I promise to serve with dedication, integrity, and a heart for the students.”
Isaac, popularly known as Iceconray, has pledged to prioritize student welfare and engagement in his administration. His leadership tenure will focus on improving campus life, enhancing student representation, and addressing key student concerns.
With the elections concluded, MAPOLY students now look forward to the new SUG administration delivering on its promises.
