MAPOLY SRC Speaks Out on SUG President’s Misconduct Allegations

The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) has released an open statement explaining allegations and legislative actions taken in relation to the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President.

The SRC, in the statement issued by its legislative arm, said the issues currently circulating in public under the caption “Public Observations and Allegations Note” were not speculative, noting that they were formally presented, debated, and recorded during plenary sessions of the House in accordance with its constitutional oversight functions.

According to the Council, the allegations before the House include claims that the SUG President allegedly appointed union patrons without the required approval or ratification of the SRC, contrary to provisions of the Students’ Union constitution regulating such appointments.

The SRC also raised concerns over alleged non-accountability of welfare items and financial assistance reportedly provided by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), including a bag of rice and the sum of ₦50,000, which were said to have neither been presented nor accounted for before the Union and the House.

Further allegations highlighted by the Council include the alleged unauthorized sale and distribution of Students’ Union Government stickers to student car owners at the rate of ₦100,000 without SRC approval or adequate student sensitisation.

The House also cited allegations surrounding the non-remittance or declaration of a ₦100,000 financial support reportedly released by the Ogun State Government to the Union through the SUG President.

In addition, the SRC accused the SUG President of allegedly appointing individuals who did not emerge from recognised electoral processes into the Congress Committee, a move the Council said raises constitutional and democratic concerns.

Following deliberations, the SRC disclosed that it invited the SUG President to appear before the House on January 16 to respond to the allegations.

The House subsequently resolved that all appointments made without legislative approval be reversed and that all welfare items and funds allegedly received on behalf of the Union be properly remitted and accounted for.

The Council further stated that the SUG President was granted a 48-hour period to appear before the House on Monday, January 19, 2025, to offer explanations and defend himself, but allegedly failed to honour the invitation.

While stressing that the matters remain allegations, the SRC emphasised that no final decision has been taken, assuring that its proceedings are guided by the principles of fair hearing, due process, accountability, and constitutional order.

The SRC added that the clarification was issued to properly inform MAPOLY students and the general public, dispel misconceptions, and reinforce confidence in the legislative process, while reaffirming its commitment to protecting the collective interests of the student body.
