HND1 Students of the Mass communication department of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic have expressed grievances over the abrupt suspension of lectures.
Press Club gathered that the suspension was a directive from the Head of Department, Mr. Kolawole Amos for a theater training organized by National Guild of producers which students from MAPOLY mass communication will be participants.
The Guild of producers will on their convergence in Abeokuta for the DGN Nollywood fiesta, hold a 3-day theater training for students drawn from tertiary institutions in Ogun.
An announcement circulated earlier by the Association of Mass Communication students (AMACOS) has it that ‘students will be allowed to leave lectures’ for the programme.
It was announced that Students will from Wednesday till Friday receive one lecture per day as against the usual two lectures per day scheduled on the time table.
The development has aggravated anger amidst students who said they prioritized lectures over anything else.
Students who expressed their grievances via comments blamed AMACOS for not announcing the change earlier, while also alleging that this is about the third time lectures will be suspended in the department without prior notice.
One of thecommentator, identified as Obj, before the announcement questioned, "Please why skipping statistics class today??? Me I don’t understand o. Is it by force to see funke akindele ni?"
Another student, Prof kenny after the announcement said "at the detriment of our learning; all because of some show off show?"
Some of those going for the programme, PCM gathered rushed back when the arrival of a lecturer was announced.
PCM further gathered that the lecturer of one of the most feared courses, statistics, was about entering the class before he was allegedly accosted by some AMACOS executives who told him of the development.
A statement by another student with an unknown pseudonym said read in part, "All information sources must be verified for authenticity. Why would we allow the AMACOS Executive Interrupt our lectures without our permission?
"Today’s lecture free day was not planned by our statistic lecturer, but he was talked out by an AMACOS Executive without the opinion of the students. This is unfair and a subjective action by the AMACOS executive. Before any activity affects our lecture it must be clearly stated and objective must be clarified.
"Statistic is a course that every student runs pillar to pole so as to achieve academic success its course.
"Today’s Statistics lecture has been canceled by its lecturer right at the point of entering the lecture room. That is a sign that he was not informed which is not a nice move for a PR event planning.
"What if the lecturer decides not to cancel the lecture? Then the students who had left due to the message passed by the AMACOS PRO would have been in a disadvantaged position.
As a student, I strongly disagree with this unprofessional act and inconsiderate decision by the AMACOS Executives."
Some students however chided the department to be best at making use of theories they are inculcating in mass communication students.
