The recent trend of ladies using leg chain can no longer be overlooked, hence, stirring up reactions from various people who hold diverse opinions and views on the use of leg chains by ladies. Fawaz Adebisi reports.
While some believe it’s fetish in nature, some believe it’s a mere fashion that can be likened to the use of earrings and necklaces.
As a matter of fact, the use of leg chains can be traced back to centuries ago, where maidens wore beads around their ankles as a means of fashion and to beautify their legs.
Leg chains or rather beads were used in the olden days to beautify the ankle and make dressing more beautiful.
However, civilization partially abolished the use of leg beads and brought into limelight leg chains instead. This means that, instead of beautifying the ankle with coral beads, ladies now make use of tiny chains made out of gold or steel.
Having found themselves in a society where old trends are being refurbished, some ladies of this century see leg chains as a means of fashion and beautification while others express counter sentiments.
According to Adewunmi Aminat, an ND1 student of Mass Communication, some ladies use leg chains for Kayanmata i.e a charm to act as a sex enhancer and some also use it as a means of identification, especially those in cult groups; hence, her dislike for the new trend.
Pitching almost the same tent with Aminat, Morenikeji an ND1 student of Mass Communication expressed her hatred towards the use of leg chains.
She said, “I don’t fancy leg chains, only useless people use it. I can’t tell friends to start wearing it – it’s their choice. I call them useless because a normal human being won’t regard someone that wears leg chain as a responsible person; it’s either the person is in a secret cult or she is wearing it for fashion. People in secret cult wear it for identification. It’s either they wear beret or leg chain or any other means of identification.”
However, an ND1 Pharmaceutical Technology student, Omotosho Kehinde, threw her weight behind the use of leg chains by ladies.
In her words, leg chains beautify the leg, emphasizing that she loves wearing it.
She further stated that the use of leg chains is based on choice as she would never tell someone not to wear it neither would she encourage someone to do so.
Victoria, an ND1 student of Mass Communication, on the other hand, likened the use of leg chains to prostitution.
She said, “I don’t like leg chains because it looks like prostitution to me.”
Abimbola, an ND2 student also supported the fact that wearing leg chains gives a sense of belonging to the negatives in the society, hence, she isn’t in support of the trend.
Fetching her opinion, Oluwadamilola, an ND1 student revealed that leg chains don’t give any advantage whatsoever.
She said “Leg chain doesn’t give any advantage, rather it gives people bad impression about you and no one would believe you even if you explained yourself.”
Individual Interest is what Matters – Fashion Brand Expert
Fateemah Afolabi is a Fashion Brand expert and she linked the notion of leg chains being fetish to the peculiarity of the country.
She said religion forms the basis for why many think leg chains as fetish.
In her opinion, leg chains is a beauty accessory just like hand chain, waist chain and what not.
Her words, “Based on this, I believe it is based on individual personality and the kind of country we find ourselves, especially the way we practice religion.
“Leg chain is part of beautification of a woman just like earring, hand chain, waist chain, ring, neck chain and so on.
“There is nothing wrong with it as it is part of fashion to wear it but personal interests matter. If you don’t like it, fine, and if you do, it adds more beauty to who you are.”
