The General Secretary of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun Joint Campus Council (JCC), Comrade Adelola Hezekiah Babatunde has urged student leaders across Ogun State to see themselves as defenders of academic stability rather than promoters of campus unrest.
He made the call on Wednesday during a leadership summit organized by his office at the 800-Seater Auditorium of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta.
The summit, which focused on strengthening responsible student governance and sustaining harmony within tertiary institutions in the state, brought together key stakeholders in the education sector.
Speaking at the event themed “The Effect of Student Leadership on Academic Stability and Campus Harmony in Our Tertiary Institutions,” Babatunde described the initiative as a deliberate effort to reshape the culture of student leadership in Ogun State.
He emphasized that student leaders must understand the weight of their influence in shaping campus environments, noting that their decisions and actions could either safeguard or disrupt academic progress.
“Student leadership must go beyond activism. It must reflect responsibility, discipline, and a strong commitment to protecting academic calendars,” he stated.
The event attracted student union presidents, NANS national and zonal delegates, and security officials, including a representative of the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, PhD. Also present was a delegate representing the Rector of MAPOLY, Arc. (Dr.) Adeoyejo Jolaoso.
According to the General Secretary, the summit created an avenue for constructive dialogue among student leaders, institutional authorities, and security agencies, with the aim of preventing crises and promoting collaboration across campuses.
He commended the management of MAPOLY for hosting the summit and supporting initiatives that encourage discipline and holistic student development.
He also acknowledged the Chairman of NANS Ogun JCC, Comrade Gabriel Abiola Francis for fostering unity and purposeful engagement within the council.
The summit concluded with a renewed commitment from participants to embrace peaceful advocacy, strengthen institutional partnerships, and ensure uninterrupted academic activities across tertiary institutions in Ogun State.
