EDITORIAL: MAPOLY Delta Variant Response: The First-Week Sham

Resulting from the emergence of one of the drastic and deadly forms of coronavirus, Delta Variant of COVID-19 which has been scientifically termed as a rod driving the latest spike in cases and death from COVID-19, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, applaudingly therefore, on July 17, 2021, remodified its methods of servicing its students by abridging lecture periods and reactivating virtual Learning Management System (LMS).

The Press Release stipulated that the new lecture schedule will see National Diploma Programme receive lectures from 8am to 12noon and Higher National Diploma Programme receive lectures from 1pm to 5pm.

It must, however, be stressed that it’s one thing to have an intention of effecting a plan and another thing to be capacitated to implement such plan. Arising from this and what were evident last week is to say the management’s response to the Delta Variant of COVID-19 seems to be an outright ruse packaged in maze as things inherently stated in the Press Release issued were apparently not visible seeing the methods at which last week’s activities went. The measures devised to be systemically and medically married to the containment of this virus are yet to be effectively put in place by the management.

Observably, last week recorded a deluge of deviances daring to trivialize the lethal effects of the Grim Reaper, COVID-19 as the week can be quoted and unquoted to be “Entrepreneurship Development’s (EED) Week”.

Virtually all students in the institution, amidst the pandemic, stormed the Centre for Entrepreneurship Development to meet up with the deadlines placed on them by their various supervisors. Students toing and froing without masking up.  Even the EED center’s terrain was unguarded to combat the armed agents of the virus. Does that mean the management applied the aphorism that says “Necessity knows no law”?

Apparently, one of the intriguing questions that will come to mind is: “Has the school management forgotten that students are unvaccinated and it needs to put stringent guidelines that would turn students in the institution to be adherently observant to the measures put in place?” Because if one were to go by the way things are run in the institution, the institution might end up being hemmed by the multifarious stooges of the Delta Variant of COVID-19 if things are not put in order. And this would be to the jeopardy of all in the institution – academic and non-academic staff, students as well as the petty workers.

Another flagrantly inordinate layout from the management’s end causing students to say ‘the response the management devised to protect them from the Delta Variant of COVID-19 is a mirage” is the untoward characters of some academic staff towards classes, especially the PM classes.

It was observed that the cut in the lecture periods lacked sustainable oxygen to have added values to students’ learning at large. With a periscope looking at the ways lectures were run last week, it’s far and large from defining as decorously managed. The mechanism put in place is seemingly a sham, for students are of the opinion that, they are still on the look to see quality from the responses marshalled by the management. Some students have decried across some departments that why would they be working, coming, preparing, swotting and anticipating classes and eventually all end in labour loss with lecturers glaringly exhausted when they come to class to lecture, especially the afternoon lectures? Saying no to labour loss is for the management to look up and see that the rain of distress and futility on students’ medical well-being and happiness is cloudy. Seeing this will most definitely precipitate some proper adjustments.

The wise ones will say to the greens these words of wisdom whenever reforms are imminent: “Can we be playing with fire and be hysterically laughing?” They will add that, “Doing that is ignorantly yet freely sending an invitation to a barrage of cannonades.” And it’s imperative and very expedient we prevent a detonation of this Grim Reaper, COVID-19.

Therefore, to hold onto a strong and worthwhile yardstick to place the management’s response to the Delta Variant of COVID-19, there must be safety protocols which must be followed to the letter starting from the school’s managers themselves, then the students’ emulation takes place in proper feasibility. Because when a child sees that his parents do what they have always instructed him to do, he will also put such learnings into practice.

Very important, regarding the abridged lecture periods, staff should resume to their respective places of work in time so as to keep up with the vigor in students, especially the PM lectures that are prone to laxity and indifference. The management should also, in a bid to deplete crowded classes, an enabler of COVID-19, split students into the empty classes, and allocate lecturers to oversee the lectures, running them concurrently. Also, we anticipate the Learning Management System (LMS) as we are yet to see it being functional as stated in the press release issued.

With that said, students should also help themselves by observing the measures put in place to contain the lethal effects of the pandemic as the management, hopefully, gears itself to make optimistic waves of changes. And if there is no pragmatic plan to effect any changes in opposition to what the first week gave us, the management should make a rescission and our lecture periods go back to normal.
