As the much anticipated Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Student Union Elections is just few hours away, there’s need for us to revisit the politicking behind the selection of a new president as well as team of executives.
After a well strategic-planning, the two major student union fora have consensually selected their representatives form just one department, Mass Communication, which is presumably known to be the house of one forum.
Feelers that we gathered revealed that there were alleged plans to split the votes from the department into halfs, since the department has one of the highest number of students and this would in turn incapacitate the lordship of the ‘owned’ forum.
We dug deeper to realise that the two candidates are part of the ‘most recognised’ students in the department and are known to be academically sound. This would in turn motivate followers to come in mass to vote for "my friend", "tutor", or "leader" as they could be commonly addressed.
Unfortunately, the outcome of the elections would not be determined by Mass Communication students alone but how well the candidates could relate with other departments, hence the adoption of team-executives from various departments with the aim of announcing their mandate.
Recall the election have been shifted lasted year after developing issues arose from the Students Union Electoral Commission and its indecisiveness.
Some are beginning to relate the elections to the just concluded national struggle between PDP and APC or the state fight between APC and APM. Students are hopeful to know if the incumbent could sustain the power, with reference to their antecedent wrongs and rights, or have a new Mapoly.
We have observed too many political battles, rallies, trade of words and support, uploaded write ups, biased prayers, postals and odd movements, predictions, speculations and analysis.
We hope the elections would be devoid of any violence and political interest as everyone anticipate the winner.
