After the makeshift election conducted last semester to get the institution having a running Students Union after 4 years of not having one, plans and promises were that this semester will see us have a “standard” election to bring about a substantive Students Union for the 2021/2022 academic session.
Recall how last semester was heated with misgivings and reservations as regards the electoral college deployed to get students leaders into power; how aspirants pulled out in the last minute citing a lack of trust for the system; how students groan over the fact that only 23 students decided the fate of over 5,000 students.
The promise and plan then were that we needed such election to stabilize electoral process in the school since the school was without financial members as stipulated in the constitution to have the ideal open ballot system conducted. In other words, the school needed to go through that necessary evil to ensure that we wine and dine in what should be a haven of electoral grandeur.
But so far, nothing has been heard concerning the SUG election. The sales of form, the date fixed, the process to be used, how the electorates will vote, the manifesto and other allied electoral activities that portend that truly election is around the corner.
Encapsulated in the proposed academic calendar for the 2nd semester of the ongoing session, the students union cum all departments have three days in November for their activities which we want to believe include their respective elections.
In the light of this – the fact that the management factored it in while drawing up the academic calendar – we want to trust that the management is having plans to have all preliminaries to the election unfolded soonest in order to ensure that nothing goes wrong with process and schedule to return due system to the SUG election.
