The much talk about Student Union Elections is over and the newly elected Students Union Executives have been inaugurated. However, the big question in the minds of many students is: would this administration fulfill its campaign promises?
Now that the electioneering period is over, Students are full of expectations from the newly elected SUG administration.
While it is worth establishing that the recently concluded election, witnessed a low turnout of students’ participation in the election processes which resulted in an unopposed election.
We expect that the present administration will change the narrative and see to the factors that culminated in that and stimulate the student’s interest in politics through thorough conviction by fulfilling all the promises made to them. By so doing, a new SUG will be birth.
It would be recalled that part of the campaign promises made by the Optimum-led administration was to alleviate the sufferings of the students during registration, and now that the registrations and file arrangement periods are ongoing as examination will kick start in a few days, students are seen with stress fully written on their faces as those in charge of signing their documents are making lives difficult for them due to negligence of duty.
As such, we implore the SUG President to intensify his efforts, so students can have a taste of the fruits of his administration by ensuring a hitch-free registration process.
Likewise, the most crucial need at the moment is the issue of delay in the release of students’ results which has generated lots of noise among the students lately. We also expect the President to look into this and possibly find ways to address it as it affects students’ preparations for exams, causes a late registration process, and affects their academic performances.
Above all, the issue of a poor transportation system has been a pain in the neck for students for years. Students lament day in, and out over the lack of buses to convey them to school, and the reason is not far-fetched, as the deplorable condition of the road isn’t helping at all which makes many of them miss classes, get late to lectures and go through stress. All these culminate in academic setbacks for them hence, the students are calling on the president to take necessary actions as regards this situation and fulfill his promises concerning transportation issues.
In addition, part of students’ expectation from the SUG administration is to see to ways management can make the school environment conducive for learning for the students by giving the poor infrastructural facilities a facelift, renovation, and repairs of the fans, roofs, air conditioning and chairs in the classes.
Besides, students’ welfare should be prioritized and given the ultimate attention it deserves as it would go a long way in resuscitating and reviving the lost Students Unionism Interest among the students.
Meanwhile, on the school fee treasury agenda, the President’s promise to the students is yet to be implemented as there are lots of students who are on the verge of dropping out as they are yet to pay their school fees.
The students want a responsive, accessible, and vibrant SUG that would listen to the cries of the student and take the necessary actions needed.
The SUG should also look for ways to revive social activities on campus as it will go a long way in relieving the stress being encountered by the students. Whereas, other sporting activities aside football should be introduced to stimulate the interest of the students as the entertainment vibe of the students is waning out as there are no platforms where students can showcase their talents and be compensated.
One of the ways Mr president could revive this is by organizing social competitions like beauty pageants, and music and essay competitions among others.
In the same vein, It will be highly appreciated if this current administration can set up a panel to address students related issues and act swiftly on them. But it’s so unfortunate that quite a several students’ activities and issues are not even known to the SUG not to talk of addressing them, the best way to get through this is to have a suggestion box mounted at strategic places in the school to get students’ complaints on any issues affecting them and proffer solutions to those challenges.
It is believed that when students see that their needs and welfare are being given utmost priority, their trust and confidence in the system develop and this will as well spur them to take an active part in student Unionism and contribute their quota to the success of the union.
In view of this, it is believed Mr president will swing into action and leave no stone unturned in ensuring vibrant and successful student unionism.
