Editorial: To Drivers On Campus

Campuses all over the world see setting standard in providing conveying devices to students’ utility. These conveying devices may be those provided by the school managers themselves or they accommodate other external bodies like cab drivers and shuttle drivers in meeting the transportational needs of the students. All in all, they are car users.

However, this objective in our campus – Moshood Abiola Polytechnic – has been met to some extent. But these days, we see drivers who cycle the campus roads and outside-campus roads without cautious attitude to students’ lives as national resources for national development. Schools don’t just impact to produce ingenious graduates, they primarily deal with lives. In fact, students’ opinion in regard to this ugly new normal on campus and outside the campus has built a credible proof to intensify that this menace is unwelcome.

After series of getting students’ views on campus about the driving pattern of these drivers – the ones managed by the management, those ones accommodated by the management and even personal users – it has now become a blatant truth that these drivers have ventured into reckless driving.

Reckless driving both within and without the campus, unarguably, would taint the image of the school and infiltrate fear into students in regard to security. Apparently, it would have been colorfully and protectively dainty if, on motion, students try to draw the minds of these drivers to their kooky and mindless mode of driving and they heed from this deed – reckless driving. But they won’t! Research has it that they have consistently sneered such caution. They, most times, even yell at students as some students whose names we keep in anonymity revealed to us that they were almost knocked down last week by these reckless car users.

Thus, curbing this ill, the school management needs to do a lot in placing orderliness to align car users even those ones who are not commercial-oriented drivers but cycle the campus and outside the campus. Songs like these should be counted as tragedy. For at this stage, the school management must see how these tragedies get altered into becoming melody in the students’ lips and other complainers. After contextualizing the constitutional might of the management, and knowing that bringing to end this plague can be done by a league of some recommendations, we, therefore, plug these recommendations to fuse it with the ones the management is building to curb the menace of reckless driving.

One, a committee should be organized on probably creating a workshop that will see to discussing about the dangers of reckless driving on campus. That they know what reckless driving could really cause, but still very active in such boorish act means they should still be a need for a touch of sensitizing them by instilling more cautiousness and consciousness into car users.

Second, car users should be placed on speed limits especially on campus, putting road ethics into a forthcoming effect. There should be monitoring agents that should see to the actualisation of this calling. Perpetuators should be checkmated. We cannot neglect the power of monitoring in a development like this.

Conclusively, we suggest there should be a sanction that should also place the reckless drivers on the losing side.

Lives matter. Reckless driving which brings accidental matter is a colossal happening that should be treated with all thoughtfulness so as to melt it up from existing in an environment like this.
