The Honourable Speaker of the Students’ Representative Council, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Rt. Mogaji Yusuf has revealed how he told students of the polytechnic to discard the idea of a protest.
Speaking at the Orientation Programme organized at the Engineering department on Wednesday, the Speaker expressed his take towards the planned protest, urging students to dissolve the idea.
Hon. Yusuf argued that protest is not the next line of action even with the demands of the students yet to be met by the school management and the Ogun state government.
In his words, “The main purpose of this programme is to orientate the newly admitted students and the returning students alike for them to know what is happening in the school.
“We told them the issue the school is facing and the issue the students are also facing. But the best option now is just to take patience till we do the SUG Election. Though all these things we are agitating for, the school is working on them. The state government is working on them while the management has answered some already.”
Hon. Yusuf disclosed that he has ordered the resolution committee to address the same issue in their various departments.
Irked by the planned protest, students’ negligence toward the student’s identity card and mode of dressing, the incumbent President of the Department, Comrade Adeosun Babatunde expressed his displeasure.
He said, “Protest on its own is not what I encourage because we might have the mindset of having a peaceful protest and some people will mix up with the crowd to make it a kind of riot.
“In everything we do, we have to take safety first. If we are saying we want to fight for our right from the school management and the government, when a man is dead, who will be there to earn the benefits later?”
He further said, “As we all know the present state of security in the country, identity card is a very small card that can save you out of troubles. With the state the school is presently, we get to know that the school I.D card itself is not always ready until most of these students have graduated due to some reasons known to the school.
“About the mode of dressing, the tenure just started now. With the help of the Sub-Dean, we have been agitating for decent dressing, and that is why we’ve tried to organize this programme to talk about their mode of dressing.”
They, however, both urged the students to be patient as their demands will soon be attended to by the school management and the state government.
