Tella Adebayo Paul
On Saturday, 28th January, Afeesat Oyindamola Olaosun was crowned as the 39th president of Junior Chamber International, JCIN. Afeeesat who is from the department of Mass communication, in an interview with Adebayo Tella Paul rolled out her plans on organising a mental health session for students of the school.
*Q. Can you introduce yourself?*
Good afternoon,sir. My name is Afeesat Oyindamola Olaosun from the noble department of mass communication, the newly elected president of Junior Chamber International Nigeria, MAPOLY.
*Q. What inspired you to join JCI MAPOLY and also go for Presidential Post?*
I want to improve my leadership prowess and at the same time influence positively with the people in my environment. I want to understand what human management is all about and the effectiveness of teamwork. I love to see positive change in my environment and I love to impact people.
*Q.What plans do you have for the students of MAPOLY as the newly elected President of JCI Mapoly?*
My plans for the school and the student at large is that am going to work on JCI brand awareness on campus, in the sense that I am going to ensure that every personality and individual are been appreciated and encouraged, and I going to do a mental health project whereby the student on campus will be able to confide in counselors, tell what their problem is and there will be a solution to it because a problem shared is a problem solved.
*Q.It was observed that a post was given to one of the newly elected executives, and the person wasn’t satisfied with the post you gave him, what can you say about that?*
When you want to push people to success and they feel reluctant you have to encourage them, is not because he gave that kind of attitude, though, I wasn’t supposed to tell him that I will be appointing him to a particular post, because there is something have seen in him and what I see in every other person I appointed as a director, that motivated me that these people can do this thing, and am somebody that love to push people to do good and trolling toward success.
*Q.If he misbehaves or does anything wrong, what will you do to him?*
He can’t do anything, this particular person you are talking about is somebody, who has been doing very well, I think maybe he fears that he’s a very busy person, and he’s scared that probably he might not be available for the duties and responsibilities attached to that post but am there as a leader to lead in the next 365 days and one of my duties is going to be encouraging people to do their best.
*Q. Speaking of the mental health project, how do you intend to execute it for the benefit of the students?*
The mental health project is going to benefit the students a lot and it’s going to be held virtually and physically and also blood donation project will take place on that same day. As it’s a mental health project, let’s help the sickle cell in the hospital as well by donating blood to them, people need blood, you know. I’m still thinking of inviting health workers, counsellors, and people that have experience when it comes to that field.
We have started dispatching letters to some of them, we will reach out to them and tell them what we what to do, that students will confide in them and you will give them your attention, they would have a session with you and you will also drop your number in case some people are feeling to call behind the scene at their own convenient time. The students will speak with the counsellors and make an appointment for them to meet at a particular place.
Meanwhile, we will ensure that most of counselors we are bringing are females .Though, it doesn’t mean if they are male too but just because of carefulness, it won’t look like JCI brought a programme to school and met somebody person and the rest make an history.
*Q.How do you want to finance the project?*
Concerning finance, JCI is a company that deals with partnership and sponsors a lot, we don’t use our money for projects we rather seek for sponsorship and partnership. There are companies out there that want to be recognised , many companies want to sponsor so many charitable projects like this. They are many companies that want to elevate and empower the youth but they have not seen the right platform. So, we are going to write to companies around us. Companies in Abeokuta, we will write to them and tell them our plans. We will write up to 10 or 20 companies and we will get a favourable responses from a good number of them and carry out the project and it would be a success by God’s grace.
*Q.What advice do you have for those having mental health issues?*
I would advise them to be persevered, optimistic and prayerful. Life is truly not a bed of roses but there is light behind the tunnel.
