Junior Chambers International (JCI) MAPOLY has donated a 2-phase modern toilet and deep well to Obafemi Owode Local Government Primary School, Alagada.
The facilities according to the association are aimed at ending open defecation in the society.
Speaking at the inauguration of the projects on Wednesday, Commissioner for Education, Modupe Mujota said the facilities will promote good living standard of pupils of the school and the environment.
Mujota who was represented by Mr Animashaun said, “from global records, about one billion people still practice open defecation, which is defecating outside and not into designated toilets.
“Emptying of bowels by people in fields, urban parks, rivers and open trenches in close proximity to the living habitations have often led to contaminated water sources and the spread of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and in most cases avoidable deaths.
“This will no doubt promote healthy living condition around the school’s environment. Public toilets must be used as we use our own toilets at home.”
Also speaking at the inauguration, Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Wole Adesiji said, “what I have seen has impressed me at a first contact. While others were vandalising properties, you were building new ones.
“It is not that the government is not willing, it is as a result of the recession. We shall do something better for this school to make learning conducive.”
The 1990 JCI National President, Ibi Shobefun charged the stakeholders to give the pupils a purpose to succeed by assisting them in important areas.
He said, “we must understand that the future belongs to the young people. Until we give them things to aspire to, their will to succeed will not come. We must live up to their expectations.”
