The Honourable Speaker of Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Mogaji has kicked against the indecent dressing of students on and off campus.
In a release, Hon. Mogaji expressed his displeasure over the immoral manner by which students dress, restating that the school frowns at the indiscipline act.
According to him, sexual assault and sexual harassment ladies suffer can be traced to indecent and immoral mode of dressing.
He added that guys have been wrongly arrested alongside armed robbers since their mode of dressing is similar.
He said, "Indecent dressing contradicts the acceptable norms and values of our school and the society, at large as it has been a major cause of the various assault and sexual harassment for ladies, while many innocent guys have been arrested in various locations alongside armed robbers just because of their manner of dressing."
The Honourable Speaker, however, appealed to students to exemplify good manners by dressing ethically as acceptable by the society.
He also urged students to be good ambassadors of the school by portraying decency.
In the same vein, the Head of Counselling Unit of the school, Dr Babalolá Káróunmí noted that the background students come from has an influence in the way they dress.
He stressed that parents who have allowed their wards to dress improperly without rebuking them are the root cause of the bad act.
The Counselor added that the society also contributes to the growth of the improper act as it is passive towards it.
"This indecent dressing can be traced back to individual houses, because before these children started wearing these clothes to school, they must have been wearing them at home. What’s the perception of the parent? What is the perception of the community towards that?"
"It is not limited to only ladies. You will see some guys put on trousers without belt. They sag. They put on rags, a tattered cloth saying they are wearing ‘crazy jeans’. It is part of indecent dressing.
"As we all know, Mapoly has zero tolerance for indecent dressing. And based on this, all of us, the stakeholders, we have roles to perform; as a parent, the school and the society. It is our collective responsibility to fight indecent dressing among our students."
Karounmi noted that the school has put in place punitive measure for erring students.
"The essence of punishment is to correct student. However, those that refuse to comply would have to go on suspension," the counselor said.
