Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Students’ Union, MAPSU read with shock and dismay the story of our dear citadel, Moshood Abiola Poly Info Abeokuta, being branded as “a notorious institution of learning” in an opinion published in @naij.com. While the writer and the publishing platform may not be an authority on such pronouncement, we make bold to say that the assertions raised in the article struggled to actually bring home the “accusation of notoriety” in all its ramifications.
It brought up the issues of campus cultism and prostitution in a desperate attempt to quickly nail its victim as though MAPOLY is the exclusive of these campus vices that are even non-existent in MAPOLY of today.
How shallow can such accusation of cultism be made of an institution that did not record a single incident of cult related clashes on it’s campus for a decade running now leading to uninterrupted academic calendar ever since? Yet it was referred to as being cult ridden? How laughable!
The writer also failed to bring to fore evidences of female prostitution, as it could not for cultism. I wonder if the writer had once walked along the polytechnic roads to see students with skimpy skirts, and topless chest or even patronised a prostitute in the Abeokuta metropolis to assume that they are Mapaites. This is not only a wild accusation that is hard to prove, but it also, regrettably, tries to kill the morale of young men and women of this glorious citadel, whose aspiration to scholarship, like their counterparts in many ivory towers is being tested.
Students of this great institution will surely welcome the writer of this shameful piece, as well as @naij.com editorial to witness the serene campus of our citadel cited on a large undulating expanse of land at Ojere, Abeokuta and also spreads over the Ogun river on the Obada axis. Then you’ll appreciate while the institution has produced many pacesetters in business, governance, politics and professionalism.
We will not bore you with the financial dynamism of our management at running, for the most part, on IGRs; our sophisticated academic library running with an e-facility; a number of lecture halls fitted with Air Conditioning; academic excellence that runs in our blood, ask ICAN & APCON; our mass communication exploits, ask Rockcity FM 101.9, @OGBC90.5FM & OGTV ; our electrical inventions including the electronic ballot-box and solar-powered street lights; the KEKE MAPOLY and other mechanical fabrication including fuel-less generating set; the ingenuity of our Students’ Union at the commissioning of an intra-campus shuttle system with 10 brand new tricycles, published in The Nation and Punch newspapers; the high level discipline evident from continued suspension and rustication of defaulters of examination codes as well the recent staff disciplinary actions against lecturer found wanting in result frauds.
This is just a tip of what MAPOLY represents. A courtesy call or genuine underground investigation by you will reveal more to you contrary to your traffic-seeking story. This is not to say that MAPOLY is an Eldorado’s. No! We are also victims of underfunding, degrading societal mores, continued youthful disgraceful exuberance, lack of academic motivation and the challenges of government attitude to the advancement of its young. What we intend to point out however is that, we are not defined by what your article portrays. We are masters of our own, confident in our ability to match our counterparts shoulder to shoulder, head held high! We are a roaring lion that is evolving and our transition to a University of Technology, which is following legislation, in the state’s House of Assembly, can attest to this.
