A student of the department of Mass Communication, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Comrade Olawale Balogun has emerged Chairman, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun state axis.
Balogun popularly known as Movement was declared winner of the 2017 election of the students’ body held at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, the state capital on Saturday.
Stakeholder of NANS from different institutions across the state converged on FUNAAB to decide who succeeds the outgoing Chairman, Comrade Dotun Opaleye.
The convention started after the President, Ogun State College of Health Technology, Ilese Com. Olalekan Quadri gave an opening prayer around 11:00am.
Opaleye declared Com Ogunsanya Babatunde as the convention chairman after the first nomination, Com. Ahmed Falola was nowhere to be found.
After a brief manifesto was given by the convention chairman he however dissolved the NANS executives and they immediately bowed out.
At the convention, 13 senators were present to represent their different institutions across the state.
For the chairmanship seat, Balogun from MAPOLY got seven votes, Isaac Thomson from Olabisi Onabanjo University had five votes, Okereafo Bestman had zero vote with one void vote.
Meanwhile, Ayobamidele Adepoju from OSCOTECH won the post of the Vice-Chairman with seven votes, Amuwa Mayowa from Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH) won the post of the General Secretary with seven votes.
Akinola Jimoh from DS Adegbenro Polytechnic won the post of Welfare Director with seven votes, Salami Adewale from OOU won the post of the Financial Director with seven votes.
Other winners include Egunjobi Babatunde from Tai Solarin University of Education who won the post of Social/sports Director with eight votes, Olaotan Lawal won the office the Public Relations Officer with seven votes, and Sunday Ajayi won the post of the Assistant General Secretary with seven votes.
Reacting after the elections, Special Adviser to Ogun State Governor on students matters, Olusegun Clement said, “we thank God. February 11, the students had their elections at FUNNAB and it was peaceful and calm as we had the presence of all the security agencies in the state.
“A young man from MAPOLY won the election with the contest of four but fortunately for him he won.
“Yes it is normal for people to show their interests to contest for an election but someone will definitely win and for those who did not win, that is not the end of the world.
“Well, my office is open for everybody who wishes ogun state and the students well,” he added.
