Chuks Ogali, an HND II student of the department of Office Technology and Management has been elected Speaker, Students’ Representatives Council (SRC).
Ogali who garnered 20 votes edged Idowu Alaba, Ibrahim Jigan and Gabriel Solaja who got 2, 4 and 10 votes respectively in the election of principal officers at the House on Monday.
It would be recalled that Ogali served as Speaker of the Interim Students’ Representatives Council (ISRC) which was disbanded in February.
Kofoworola Ojo of the department of Hospitality (HND) and Daniel Oshobusola of the department of Marketing (HND) were also re-elected as Chief Whip and Clerk respectively. Both were re-elected unopposed.
Paul Egwuaje of the department of Food Science and Technology (HND) emerged Deputy Speaker after defeating Adetunji Oladimeji and Olumide Olayemi who scored 4 and 6 votes respectively.
Jamiu Ogunbamowo of the department of Mass Communication (ND) who had served as Deputy Speaker of the ISRC emerged Deputy Clerk with 17 votes. His opponents, Paul Adebayo and Olamilekan Ariyo got 1 and 12 votes respectively.
Speaking to Press Club MAPOLY after being declared Speaker, Ogali said the time is right to reposition students unionism in MAPOLY for the better.
Ogali said he will use his good offices to proffer solutions to the numerous challenges faced by students of the institution.
“I say thank you to God and those who believe in me for the second time. The first time was for the interim and now I have come back as the SRC Speaker of this our great institution.
“What I will say is that, I will continue the good work I have started.
“They (students) can bring all of their complains to me via their various representatives and like I said earlier, I have come to do the needful and not for any other thing.
“Because I want a better MAPOLY, I want a better Students’ Union and I also want this institution to be well recognised and to move it to the next level,” Ogali added.
The election which lasted more than an hour was conducted by the Oluwadoyinsola Olaibi-led Students’ Union Electoral Committee (SUELECO). Officials of the Directorate of Students’ Affairs including the Acting DSA, Akin Ajayi; Students’ Affairs Officer, Ayobami Odelade and Counsellor, Dr. Rotimi Olukoya were also present during the elections.
Thirty-five representatives from the department of Mass Communication, Estate Management and Valuation, Science Laboratory Technology, Accountancy, Civil Engineering, Business Administration, Pharmaceutical Technology were present during plenary.
Others include representatives from the department of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Electronics Engineering, Architecture, Office Technology and Management, Marketing, Statistics and Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Food Science and Technology, Building Technology, Urban and Regional Planning and Hospitality.
