…aims to foster peace, unity on campus

In what promises to be a groundbreaking celebration of cultural diversity and unity, the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, Students’ Union Government, SUG, has announced plans to host the institution’s first-ever cultural fiesta, tagged MAPOLY Cultural Fiesta, Ojude MAPOLY, on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
Speaking exclusively with Press Club MAPOLY, the SUG President, Ogunlana Isaac, also known as Iceconray, described the event as a historic collaboration between the Students’ Union Executive Council, SUEC, and the Students’ Representative Council, SRC. According to him, the initiative was inspired by similar events such as Ojude LASU and Ojude GAPOSA, which have gained popularity in their respective campuses.
“This is the first time MAPOLY is hosting anything like this,” he said. “But we didn’t just want to replicate other schools. That’s why we renamed it MAPOLY Cultural Fiesta, with Ojude MAPOLY in brackets, because it’s going to be bigger. It’s not just about the Ijebu culture; it’s about showcasing the rich cultural diversity on our campus.”
According to Iceconray, the goal is not just festivity but fostering unity, peace, and dialogue among students. On the day of the event, different schools within the polytechnic, such as Amuludun as School of Communication Information and Technology, SCIT, Asiwaju as School of Science and Technology, SST, and Kowope, School of Business and Management Studies, SBMS, will represent their “families” in colorful cultural displays at the MAPOLY sports pavilion.
“That day, we’re turning our school into one big family,” he said. “It’s more than just celebration, it’s togetherness. Everyone will sit, eat, dance, talk, and vibe to the rhythm of culture. It’s not just like a sports event where everyone’s eyes are on a match. This one brings people together for interaction, drumming, horse riding, live performances, and real cultural collaboration.”
Other schools to participate are; Balogun as School of Engineering, SENG and Atunluse as School of Environmental, SENV ‘families’.
The event will feature live bands, traditional performances, family-themed competitions, and prize presentations. Each faculty or school will be encouraged to come in uniform to showcase their cultural identity, although the SUG has emphasized that no general fees will be demanded from students.
“We’re not collecting any money from anyone as a union,” the president clarified. “But each school may decide on their own to contribute towards dressing uniformly. We’re only asking that they encourage their students to cooperate.”
He also assured that more updates will be released in the coming days, as plans unfold toward what is expected to be one of the most vibrant events in MAPOLY’s recent history.
With this, MAPOLY joins a growing list of Nigerian institutions embracing cultural renaissance and unity through on-campus festivities, setting a new precedent that future student administrations may carry forward.
