An HND 1 student of Mass communication, Omoniyi Samson has emerged winner of the Junior Chamber International Nigeria (JCIN) annual Moruf Popoola public speaking competition.
Moruf Popoola is an annual public speaking competition organised by Junior Chamber International Nigeria (JCIN), MAPOLY where winner represents the chapter to compete at the state and international level.
The seventh edition of the competition held at the Babalakin hall of the school had the participants debate on, "Agriculture: a needless efforts in improving the economy of Nigeria" in the presence of students and lecturers.
Seven participants who made the finals were Omoniyi Samson and Adekunle Oloruntoba, Oluwatosin Francis and Temitayo Ipinlaye, Oruku-lawal Aishah and Shodunke Ademola and Olajide K. Timileyin from the department of Mass communication, Business Administration, Accountancy and Pharmacy respectively.
Omoniyi had last semester won the public speaking competition organised by the Association of mass communication students.
Scoring 88.75%, Omoniyi edged his colleague, Adekunle Oloruntoba from mass communication department with 84.75% while Oluwatosin Francis from Business Administration trailed on with 82.5%.
In his address, the guest speaker of the event, Dr M. A Akinsola, noted that irrespective of one’s field of study one can still venture into agriculture.
According to him, "there are various branches of agriculture like Poultry, Animal husbandry, Mechanical agric., Fishery. When you start earning it does not remove the tie on your neck".
He mentioned that agriculture is relevant in the provision of food and source of income.
The president of JCIN Mapoly, Miss Olabisi Olajumoke, while speaking with PCM expressed her happiness with the success of the competition noting that one of the aims of the competition was to build the good image of the school and to help students discover and develop themselves.
Explaining why seven students from four departments participated at the competition out of 28 department that were supposed to be presence at the competition, Olajumoke disclosed that the finalists qualified from preliminaries.
"This public speaking competition is in two stage. We have done the preliminary where some participants from other department were screened out of which this seven participants were shortlisted for the final" she said.
Olabisi, stated that for the first time since 2012 there had not been first and second position from the same department adding that the winner of the competition would represents the club in the next round.
She finally advised students of the school to take their study seriously so that they could become somebody in life.
Present at the competition were, the 1990 National President of JCIN, Senator Ibijuwon, MAPSU President, Owomummy represented by Vice President among others.
Also at the event was one time Nigerian champion and second best in Africa at the 2016 JCI public speaking competition, Rita who geared participants to victory charging all present to make public speaking an hobby.
