Following the inadequate supply of portable water in Abeokuta, student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic have raised concerns over the presence of Guinea worm diseases in untreated water.
The Microbiology HND 1 students of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology stated that the disease also known as Drancuculus Medinesis is found in stagnant water and students run the risk of creating it when they use stagnant water.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Olawalarami Oshobusola said the parasite that causes this disease is a micro-organism that cannot be seen with bare eyes. She said the parasite can be present in the body of the host for about a year without showing any symptoms.
She warned students who fetch water in rivers, streams and other unsafe places to treat their water by boiling, using filter membrane or chlorine. Osho said the organisms cannot survive in and environment hotter than 60 degrees Celsius.
