EDITORIAL: 100 DAYS IN OFFICE: Ups and Downs of Arc Dr. Babatunde Jolaoso

Hundred days ago, Arc. Dr Babatunde Jolaoso, an alumnus of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, became the 10th substantive rector of the institution.

Assuming office on Dec 6, 2024, Dr Jolaoso inherited a mixed legacy of administrative bottlenecks, financial challenges, and infrastructural deficits.

Today, his leadership has sparked reforms, fostering transparency, institutional growth, and undeniable renewed confidence in the polytechnic’s governance.

MAPOLY, for the past few years, have been known to delay student’s results for a year before release, while this caused many setbacks, a session will not elapse without witnesing one or two protests.

Similarly, for 13 years, despite paying yearly, the institution did not hold any convocation ceremony for her graduates, contributing to student’s distrust in the management.

In the same vein, till last year, students of the citadel lamented stressful registration, clearance, staying on queues for long among others, to clear one’s self before becoming a student.

Also, till last year, MAPOLY Radio, which aims to serve students and it’s environs in giving adequate update about institution and at the same time strengthen Mass Communication students’ experience academically.

However, all these have been solved within Jolaoso’s 100 days in office. One of his first moves was revitalizing the Academic Board, ensuring the long-stalled approval of students’ results resumed. With this step, he has almost cleared students’ backlog results.

Also, the rector has announced to hold the institution’s first convocation ceremony in 13 years, sparking excitements and reviving students’ trusts in the management.

To solve stressful registration, within 100 days, he digitalized student’s clearance, making it seamless and stressful for them.

In the same vein, the National Broadcasting Commission ,NBC, has given MAPOLY radio, 99.7FM, licence to start full operation, giving room for Mass Communication students to grow academically.

Other significant changes are tackling admission irregularities by exposing cases of fraudulent credentials among students, resulting to the immediate expulsion of culprits.

Moreso, the institution launched her first ever solar motor, invented by the department of Mechanical Engineering.

MAPOLY also secured JAMB’s approval for a Computer-Based Testing (CBT) Centre, positioning the institution as a hub for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) assessments.

As gathered, in a bid to provide accommodation for students, Jolaoso revived the dormant hostel
project, leveraging a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model that brought in MAPOLY alumni and private investors.

In all, Dr Jolaoso has been doing well, however, there are still places to adjust. Press Club MAPOLY has received several complaints from the newly upgraded website.

Ranging from distortion of results to not being accessible whenever there’s much traffic on it. Students have received ‘ridiculous’ results, making them question the credibility of the newly upgraded website.

The website has also been noticed to be down whenever much traffic is on it, however, this is not supposed to be as it is a website to be utilized by thousands of students.

PCM therefore advises the management to seek expert opinion to solve these problems to avoid future ugly circumstances.
