Students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, have threatened to hold a massive protest on Tuesday, following a sudden increment of the Student Union Government, SUG due by 125 percent.
The SUG, under the aegis of Prosper Oladele, popularly known as Chemical, released a press statement on Monday evening, informing students about the increase.
The union stated that its due price has been shifted from ₦800 to ₦1800, stressing that the increment is with immediate effect
Reacting to this, students from various departments in campus, gathered in the SUG WhatsApp platform, have threatened march down to the union’s chamber to protest.
They demanded reasons for the sudden increment, stressing how life is hard for them, as students, to live.
Many of the students have also expressed how they have exhausted their parents with bills, lamenting that there are no sources of income for them.
Press Club MAPOLY, PCM, therefore reached out to the union’s president to react to the students response.
Speaking on this, Chemical said that the increment was the betterment of the students, stressing that the union only added a sum of ₦625 to its due.
In his words, the SUG fee is ₦1,425 while maintenance fee is ₦375, saying that the union “is not trying to extort students.”
He said, “the actual amount expected for student to pay is ₦1420 while the portal maintenance is ₦375.
“There are alot of things student are not enjoying in MAPOLY, which if change is to occur it start with from somewhere and some people and some people will be the one to pay for the price for the change to occur, which we are the ones to pay the price.
“They are so many things we want to do for the benefits of student and they are so many things that are going wrong that we want to correct.”
He stressed that although the pain is much, it is necessary to take, adding that “critically looking at the expenses of the economy, the former price won’t be able to achieve the things for the student.”
He further stated that, “there are some steps the union will take that will annoy the student but the end will be beneficial to the students.
“Part of the plans we have is to bring in some new innovation, but the student won’t understand now till later because we are diplomatic about our assignment.”
He therefore urged students to be patient with them, pleading and asking students to remain ” optimistic and have trust in us,” adding that, “we are not trying to take money from their purse.”

It’s not a thing if surprise if the increase is high. The student populace needs a president that would alleviate the burden of the student not adding salt to their wound again. Calculating the #375 on thousands of students in campus is a big amount. I believe the last administration should leave some funds in the account for this present administration.
