The act of dressing to kill is very common among students Of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta – especially the females. They dress to look appealing, sexy, and attractive instead of dressing responsibly. Strapless clothes, bum shorts, short blouse, miniskirts/gown, cleavage shirts, sagging of trousers by boys and even girls are the major problems associated with indecent dressing today on campus.
The amazing part is that some of these dresses cause discomfort to the wearer. For instance, a lady wearing a mini skirt won’t have much freedom while sitting in a bus nor would she be comfortable while trying to board a motorcycle.
To cap it up, some students still take delight in wearing transparent clothing which reveals parts of their body that should not be exposed to the public.
We often wonder what makes students take delight in putting on these types of clothes and the results are that poor parenting and moral upbringing of children play a role as well, what they are exposed to through the media especially Social Media, some are even as a result of pressure group and the notion of “wanting to feel among and be in vogue”.
Recently, the rate at which rape cases are being reported is at an all-time high. One would think they had forgotten that they can be lured into prostitution by their peers, they have forgotten that they may be influenced to join a cult group or the other. A Yoruba adage says; “the way you dress is how you will be addressed"; meaning some ladies who dress indecently may be seen as harlots even though she might not be one, thereby giving herself a bad image. Indecent dressing can devalue a woman because it exposes what forms her treasure. To the males, it gives them an image of irresponsibility.
MAPOLY Is known for producing decent, morally upright and intellectual students who contribute to the country’s national growth, and they have been known for maintaining the standard by not permitting students to dress indecently on campus.
Section 6.10 of the students’ Handbook 2017 Edition stated categorically the clothes students should put on campus and the appropriate punishment should a student violate the law.
To stop this inappropriate act, there should be a law whereby if any student is not properly dressed, they should face the consequences of being arrested and put with the security guard for over 12 hours. The school management, associations and departments should educate the students on the consequences of indecent dressing. Lecturers are to be admonished to ban such students from attending classes.
This can be achieved by the collective efforts of the securities, lecturers, non-teaching staff, departmental executives, students leaders and the management. Also, to complement such efforts, parents must teach their children how to dress decently via parents dressing decently themselves, as this will serve as an example to their children.
The Press Club as an agent of socialization must promote good moral values and encourage students to dress decently. The Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), and The Joint Campus Fellowship (JCF), should preach against such acts.
