OPINION: Valentine’s Day: Beyond the romantic celebration

Throughout the World, February 14th of every year is a day set aside to mark the Valentine’s day celebration.

This day is recognized by all and sundry especially lovers who hold the day in high esteem to show love to one another romantically.

Youths, teenagers, students, lovebirds see Valentine’s day as the most special day of the year to show love within themselves exchanging gifts, love letters, chocolates, cakes and cards and many others to renew their love for one another.

To celebrate this special day, colours with red, white and yellow clothes take over as the dress code for many. Some people also go on dates and many romantic acts to show love but the reason behind the celebration is unknown to many. What is the real meaning behind this special day?

While a lot of people seem to be interested in the romantic gestures that come with the celebration, those who do not have partners, lovers to celebrate the day with get bittered towards themselves. If the definition of Valentine’s day is seen as only for those who are in a romantic relationship then what becomes of people who are single, and those who are not engaged in any form of relationship?

A look at the origin of Valentine’s Day, shows that the purpose was to honor Saint Valentine, a third-century Roman saint who according to historians was said to have defied the emperor’s law by marrying couples in secret.

This emperor’s law states that lovers were to remain separate, allowing the males to be sent into the emperor’s army. But St. Valentine didn’t gain or benefit from his actions as his only reward was death.
