…urges students to engage in campus politics
The Students’ Union Electoral Committee, SUELECO, has screened 18 candidates contesting for positions in the forthcoming Students’ Union Executive Council, SUEC elections, assuring students of transparency and fairness in the process.
Speaking during the exercise, the SUELECO Chairman, Ayoola Samuel, explained that the screening, which commenced around 12 p.m., involved a thorough checking of students’ capabilities.
In Samuel’s voice, the screening checked the students’ appearance, communication, knowledge and experience, leadership skills, teamwork and welfare.
When asked if results of candidate was also a prerequisite, he said, “yes, that’s the final requirement and it will be done by the Directorate of Students’ Affairs, (DSA, Mr David Aninkan).”
On concerns about the credibility of the voting platform, the Chairman assured that the online system was safe and secure, stressing that students would be required to log in with personal details before casting their votes.
While acknowledging that there were challenges with the portal in the past, he added that the technical team now actively manages the platform to avoid glitches. “The last election held was smooth”, he added.
Commenting on the quality of candidates, the Chairman expressed satisfaction, saying all aspirants appeared well-prepared for the responsibilities ahead. He also confirmed that there were contestants for all major positions, though some offices had only one candidate each.
The chairman also spoke about declining student interest in campus politics, which, according to him, has worsened since the introduction of online voting. He emphasized the need for students to take active part in elections to ensure credible representation.
“As students, we need to be part of these elections so we can elect the right leaders. Not everyone will have interest in politics, but those who do should participate and make their voices heard,” he urged.
He further advised students to pay their Students’ Union Government, SUG, dues so they can be eligible to vote, adding that participation in union politics strengthens student representation before the school management.
